POLICE in Blackpool have launched a new initiative to help youngsters cure the summertime blues.

Operation Antidote is targeting young people with time on their hands who could end up involved in anti-social behaviour.

Police say they have the option of videoing evidence of bad behaviour and showing that to parents. But making convictions won't be their top priority.

PC Julie Benn, who is involved in the operation, said that they would be talking to youngsters to push them towards specially arranged summer activities.

Young people are being referred to the Splash Scheme which has six centres in the town and offers activities including wall climbing, quad biking, drama, sports and excursions out of the area.

"We want to reassure the people of Blackpool that there is positive action we can take, even during the school summer holidays," said PC Benn.

"We are also working with youth workers and the education department who can come out and talk to people and find out what they would like to see in their area."

The Splash Scheme centres are at Bispham High School; Beacon Hill High School; St Monica's Church, Mereside; the Boys' and Girls' Club at Laycock Gate; Vida Sports Centre at Grange Park and Roseacre Primary School, Highfield. Information is available on 392323.

The Oasis Scheme for young people is held in the evening at Blackpool Sports Centre in Stanley Park and the youth club at Revoe School.
