POLICE are warning people to be on their guard after bogus officials stole rings, cash and credit cards from an elderly couple's home in Plungington Road, Preston, on Saturday.
The duo, posing as water board officials, said they needed to inspect the house's water supply.
While one persuaded the couple to sit downstairs the other man stole property from upstairs.
The first thief was 6ft tall, with sandy or fair hair, clean-shaven and slim.
He was in his late twenties and was wearing blue denim jeans, white trainers and a blue or grey checked shirt. He spoke with an Irish accent.
The second was in his thirties and of broad build. He was 5ft 8ins tall, with short dark hair, unshaven and wore blue overalls and a navy blue donkey-type jacket.
The pair also took two blue and yellow floral designed duvet covers, a brown and gold blanket-style throw and mixed floral designed armchair covers.
Detective Sergeant Simon Ingham, of Preston police, said: "This is a despicable offence.
"I would urge people that if they have any doubts about the authenticity of workers at their door then please do not to let them in. If you are really concerned call the police."
Call Preston police on 203203 with information.
