IT has been interesting reading recent correspondence about Bury FC and to see that there are still people out there who claim to be Bury fans, but who seem to think that Bury FC can never amount to anything but a nursery club for Man United, or some other Premiership outfit.

I was particularly irritated by "Man United and Bury Fan" who wrote to tell us that he couldn't care less that this season will be the centenary of Bury's magnificent record FA Cup Final win, claiming that tradition counts for nothing.

While agreeing that we all have to move on, surely tradition and history are the very foundation stones of our identity.

Does "Man U and Bury Fan" wish to ignore the Reds' treble-winning side of 1999? Does he never look back with pride to the 1968 European Cup? Does he seriously believe that true followers of United and football in general should forget the tragic events of Munich 1958?

History and tradition are clearly important, and anyone who says otherwise is talking nonsense despite the shallow attempts of the Premier (or "Greed is Good") League to persuade us all that history only began in 1992.

Next April marks the one hundredth anniversary of one of the most notable achievements in the history of Association football and our club, Bury, is the club that did it.

I sincerely hope that the club organises some kind of official commemoration of this unique event, and for once capitalises on what could, and should, be a valuable and all-too-rare opportunity for good publicity.

But even if they miss out once again I, for one, will be celebrating in style and I suggest all Bury supporters do the same!
