LAW-ABIDING shoppers in Bury will be "over the moon" to learn of a new crackdown on town centre criminals.
Operation Lunar is a joint initiative between the police and the successful community warden service to deter and arrest shoplifters, pickpockets and beggars who plague the main shopping centre.
The operation is being spearheaded by Bury Township Police who will join community safety wardens on patrol of the town centre as well as take part in undercover surveillance.
Inspector Dave McElroy, head of the township, said: "At the beginning of the year we staged a similar operation which resulted in 47 people being arrested for offences such as theft and shoplifting.
"As part of Operation Lunar we will be drawing on the experience of the community wardens who are our eyes and ears on the street.
"Together we will show would-be offenders they are not wanted and the public can be re-assured that we are working to make the town centre a safe place to shop."
As well as keeping their eyes peeled for offenders, the police and wardens will be offering crime prevention advice to shoppers and mobile phone users.
Insp McElroy said: "It only takes a moment for people to lose their bags, wallets, purses or mobile phones.
"So it is important for the public to learn basic personal security to protect themselves and their belongings."
The public are being urged to remain vigilant when out and about in the town centre and ensure that shopping bags and handbags are not accessible to thieves. Purses and wallets should also be kept in trouser pockets when possible.
Mobile phone users are also encouraged to access their IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number on their handset. Dial *#06# and make a note of the code. The number will help police should the phone get stolen.
