ENA Douglas turned her birthday bash into an £800 fund-raiser for the East Lancashire Magic Eye Appeal.

Kind-hearted Ena celebrated her 60th with a ceilidh and supper in Chatburn school hall but asked friends and family who gathered for the celebration to make donations to the appeal rather than buying gifts.

And the magnificent donation reflected Ena's popularity as well as the way the appeal has been taken to heart by the community.

Ena's husband, Howard, who recently spent seven weeks in Queen's Park Hospital, baked two giant birthday cakes for the 120 guests at the party.

Magic Eye Appeal co-ordinator Sheila Shaw said the party had been a real community gathering which had captured the imagination.

"Everyone was so supportive of Ena's wish to support the appeal," said Sheila.

The Lancashire Evening Telegraph Magic Eye Appeal aims to raise £200,000 for a state-of-the-art ultrasound endoscopic scanner.

The equipment will benefit the whole of East Lancashire by offering quicker and less traumatic diagnosis of stomach and oesophagus cancer.
