A 30-YEAR-OLD woman was fighting for her life today after suffering massive head injuries in an attack at her home.
Mandy Burton was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary following treatment at the scene and later transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital where she was detained in the critical care unit.
An 18-year-old woman has been arrested and was due to be interviewed by detectives later today.
Officers were called to the address in Moor Gate Street, Mill Hill, Blackburn, at 9.15pm yesterday.
Today, neighbours said the house was the home of the victim and another woman, Louise Berry.
Police said the victim and the woman being questioned are not related but that they were investigating the possibility that there had been a domestic incident.
Today as police officers guarded the front and rear of the house, neighbours spoke of what they had witnessed over the weekend.
One, who refused to be named, said there had been trouble in the street on Saturday evening and again on Sunday night around 10pm.
She said: "There has never been trouble before but I know that the woman is in a bad way."
At a nearby newsagent, one woman spoke of the disturbance on Saturday night.
She said: "I think someone was arrested and people coming in this morning have been talking about it and saying they think the woman might die."
Detective Inspector Peter Broome said: "The victim had massive head injuries but we cannot say at this stage whether or not a weapon was used.
"Obviously we are investigating the circumstances under which she came about these injuries as well as trying to identify the person who is responsible for causing them.
"We have a number of lines of inquiry which we are currently following.
"Forensic examinations have been carried out at the property and further examinations will be carried out later today.
"We are also carrying out door-to-door inquiries.
"I would urge anyone who has any information on this incident to contact police."
Anyone with information is asked to call Blackburn CID on 01254 353564.
