REGARDING the number of speed cameras that have been sited in and around Blackburn and Darwen, I would like to congratulate both the police and the council on this excellent initiative.

For far too long many motorists have blatantly ignored speed restrictions, with the result being on too many occasions unnecessary deaths and serious accidents on our roads.

Therefore, any measure that will help prevent this can only be a good and positive thing.

Why not site a camera at every set of traffic lights and punish accordingly drivers who ignore or drive through red lights -- and similarly, those who double park and park on double yellow lines?

I would also like to see a crackdown on the aggressive "boy racer" intimidating driving that seems to be prevalent among morons who think that this sort of driving is both macho and improves their street credibility.

Another point that needs addressing is the number of modified vehicles, that is, ageing sports models with blacked out windows and modified, illegal numberplates that drive around the town playing what can only loosely be termed as music at unacceptably loud, or should that be dangerous? levels. How can any driver in such a vehicle be aware of and hear other road users?

I would also like to see spot checks of vehicles for tax and insurance and see more prosecutions for those using mobile phones while driving.

I agree wholeheartedly that motorists must adhere to the law and that the police are correct to enforce it, but it seems that preventing speeding is the only area currently being addressed.

I would like the police to crack down hard on all aspects of dangerous driving and make examples of those engaging in it.

As for motorists who complain bitterly when they are caught speeding and have to pay the subsequent fine, may I offer this small piece of advice: Have regard for others' safety and drive safely within the specified speed limit.

ANDREW MAHON, Brandy House Brow, Blackburn.
