BURNLEY'S players know they let down their manager, their fans and not least themselves against Brighton on Saturday but they have vowed to put things right.
"Our pride has been hurt and we have to do better," admitted angry midfielder Paul Weller. "We all looked at each other on Saturday and everyone was flat and that is not like us.
"The manager gave us a real roasting after the game in the dressing room and the papers and he was right to do so, we deserved it.
"But I can assure the fans that we were as upset as him and none of the lads had a great Saturday night.
"I am one of the worst losers you will ever see and it was even worse because it was against my home town club and I had wanted to put one over on them.
"But that is in the past now and we have to focus on going to Wolves on Saturday and putting it right. It is a great opportunity because the last two times we played them we went 3-0 down and we don't want that to happen again."
Weller knows it will take a dramatic improvement to get something from one of the promotion favourites but he insisted the players are all determined to show what they can do.
"We just weren't at the races against Brighton and we know we have got to perform properly," he said. "We know we will lose games but it is how you lose them and Saturday was not good enough. We have to get really stuck in from now on.
"We have put Saturday to bed because it is pointless dwelling on it. We have worked very hard in training on Sunday and Monday and we can't wait for the next game."
Weller knows he has a lot of training to do as his appearance as a second half sub came after only a very limited pre-season training programme, hampered by badly bruised bones on his right foot.
"I did a little bit of training on Tuesday and Wednesday, did not do a great deal on Thursday and then trained with the first team on Friday.
"The gaffer then spoke to me and asked how I would feel about doing 20 minutes or half an hour.
"I told him I would love to be involved but I was really tired after it. I know I have got a hard few weeks ahead getting fully fit because I am playing catch-up."
Weller missed the trip to the Isle of Man because his right foot was in plaster and he admitted it was a freak injury.
"I went to kick the ball with my left foot, which is quite unusual for me, and the right foot buckled underneath me," he said. "The specialist said that when it is bruised it is hard to heal and that is why I had it in plaster.
"It has been really frustrating missing pre-season because I had to sit and watch the games against Bolton and Bury but it is better to miss friendlies than League games."
With an extra week's work behind him Weller is hopeful he can play an even bigger part against Wolves at the weekend although he knows competition for places will be great as everyone wants to play their part as the players aim to right the wrongs from the opening day.
