DARWEN Lions are staging their first extra fund-raising event as they bid to make up a shortfall in charity funds.

On September 1, a fun day is being staged for children at Darwen Leisure Centre car park so they can go wild the day before they return to school.

There will be a fun fair, a gymnastic display, charity stalls, and a happy hour for adults to have a drink and unwind themselves.

Darwen Lions are trying to raise £3,000 after their 23rd annual gala was ruined by rain in June.

Unless they reach their target, Christmas parties for children and pensioners may have to be cancelled.

Other events are planned throughout the rest of the year, including a Christmas Gala in November.

Darwen Lions have pledged a portion of the cash from the September 1 event to the Lancashire Evening Telegraph's Magic Eye Appeal, which aims to raise £200,000 for a state-of-the-art ultrasound endoscopic scanner.

The equipment will benefit the whole of East Lancashire by offering quicker and less traumatic diagnosis of stomach and oesophagus cancer.

Darwen Lions are also looking for new members.

A recruitment evening at Whitehall Country Club, Ross Street, Darwen, takes place this Thursday from 8pm.
