BLACKBURN defender Craig Short believes 'stability' must be the watchword between now and next May as Rovers attempt to learn vital lessons from last season's flirtation with relegation.

Disappointing home defeats against sides like Sunderland plunged the club into trouble at the wrong end of the table after Christmas.

And Short wants to avoid any repeat performances - starting on Saturday against the Wearsiders at Ewood.

"It sounds boring, but I just want us to get off to a good start and then stay in that middle clutch of clubs," said Short.

"I just hope we've learnt a few lessons from last time. There's a very thin line between success and failure but there was certain games where we should have taken more, like the Sunderland games home and away and Leeds United at home.

"So, hopefully, we'll learn from that.

"But then again, can we also produce some of the better performances we put in against the likes of Manchester United at home and Arsenal away?

"That's going to be tough to do that again.

"At the end of the day, it's a confidence thing and it's vital we get off to a good start again.

"There were times last season when we had some good spells and we started talking about getting into the top eight.

"When we played we also played some exciting stuff so it would be great if we could kick on and secure a top 10 finish.

"As for the Cups, they're a bonus and if we can get on another run like last season then that would be quite exceptional.

"It would also be nice to make a mark in Europe as well because that helps to raise the overall profile of the club.

"But the league has to remain our priority because that's our bread and butter."
