POLICE today warned owners of motorbikes and scooters to be on their guard following a spate of thefts.
Thieves have targeted vehicles in Duke Bar and Briercliffe with some taken from back yards and others from sheds and garages.
Now police are advising motorcycle owners to try to prevent theft by ensuring their bike is parked securely and preferably chained to an immovable object, even it is kept in a back yard or driveway.
Other tips include: Parking in a busy public place during the day or in a well-lit area at night and using custom-built motorcycle areas with fixed parking stands or loops where possible.
The steering lock should always been engaged, consider fitting an alarm and security mark the vehicle and any accessories with the Vehicle Identification Number, registration number or postcode.
Inspector Dave Croll said: "We are working hard to catch offenders and recover stolen property and we already have a number of leads. What I would ask of scooter owners, is that they play their part too Calls to Crimestoppers are free, you do not need to give your name and you may receive a reward."
A wide range of crime prevention literature is available from local police stations. Anyone with concerns can call the crime prevention department at Burnley police direct on 01282 472187.
