UP TO 1,000 real ale fans supped their way through 40 varieties of beer at a festival in a Clayton-le-Moors pub.

The annual four-day festival at the Albion, Whalley Road, now in its fourth year, attracted visitors from over the Pennines and as far afield as Exeter.

For the first time, landlord John Burke was accepting euros as well as sterling, an experiment that saw 74 euros - around £46 - handed over by thirsty beer lovers. Visitors were also treated to live music with acoustic and full band performances over the four days.

"It went well. Apart from Friday night when it rained and I couldn't put the music outside," said John

"But everybody still enjoyed themselves."

Yesterday he was already planning the next festival in October as he was clearing up the debris from this week's event.
