LEIGH CC gave their visiting sponsors from E.D.S. Memorex Telex something to remember with a tremendous performance against a shell-shocked Sefton Park side resulting in a 116-run victory.
Leigh won the toss and, not surprisingly, elected to bat first in perfect conditions on a what looked like a superb batting wicket.
The runs flowed right from the start and when Steven Mullaney was out for 21 off 16 balls there were already 41 runs on the board after only 4.3 overs. The pace did not slacken as Leigh raced to 72 in the tenth over when Andy Batterley was dismissed for 29 off 23 balls including seven fours.
Ronnie Davis and Jo Angel continued the onslaught with Lancashire paceman Mike Smethurst having to be removed from the attack after being hit for 43 runs off seven overs. Angel made spectacular progress to his half century in just 37 minutes off 38 deliveries before Davis was dismissed for 22 with the score on 131 in the 20th over.
Gareth Cross was bowled by visiting skipper Stuart Wade for nine and Dave Dove then joined Angel to continue the all out attack. Sefton's bowling and fielding fell apart as they became disheartened and Angel raced to his century off 85 balls in 105 minutes. The hapless visitors were finally put out of their agony when the declaration was made after 40 overs with the score on 241 for 4 and the partnership worth 99.
Angel's undefeated 109 contained four sixes, one of which cleared Beech Walk by a considerable distance, one five and ten fours and Dove batted superbly to finish with 39 not out.
Sefton's openers, Nicholas and Smethurst, seemed to be in the mood to make a fight of it as they made cautious progress against Angel and Davis, but after both had been dismissed by Angel as the score reached 28 the rot soon set in.
Houghton had the the temerity to score 14 runs off Angels eighth over but after hitting Chris Melia for six he was bowled next ball by a well flighted delivery. Three more wickets fell quickly and Sefton were in total disarray at 56 for 8.
Some degree of respectability was restored by number 8 batsman Howie Parker (36) and last man Wade (23 n.o.). They enabled their side to reach 125 with a last wicket stand of 49 before Parker was well caught at gulley by Ben Cottrell off Angel who finished with 4 for 49.
The previous evening Leigh had booked a place in the final of the Liverpool Echo 20 over knockout competition by beating Ormskirk at Beech Walk. The visitors were dismissed for 80 with David Snellgrove opening the batting and being last man out for 36.
Dave Potters only over contained a hat-trick and Jo Angel took 3 for 10. Leigh were wobbling at 31 for 4 but Ronnie Davis (26 n.o.) and Dave Dove (25 n.o.) both batted superbly to win the match without further loss with 2.4 overs to spare. Leigh will play Bootle in the final.
Leigh travel to Brook Lane to take on Ormskirk in a league game on Saturday and entertain Worsley on Bank Holiday Monday.
