DARWEN maintained their grip on the Northern Premier League thanks to a comprehensive seven wicket victory over Leyland Motors at Birch Hall on Saturday.

Motors were put in to bat on a good track, and despite losing Baines early on to Mercer for 13, cruised to 125-1 before the second wicket fell in the 38th over. Once again it was Mercer who struck, bowling Catteral for 35. Only six more runs were added before he struck again, trapping Patel leg before for just four.

This victory leaves Darwen 21 points clear at the top of the league and next weekend they face St Annes away on Saturday and Chorley away on Bank Holiday Monday in crucial games that could be championship deciders.

Professional Ashraf was providing stiffer resistance and he went on to make a fine 100 before he became Mercer's fourth victim with the score on 197. Motors eventually finished on 204-4 from their alloted 57 overs with Aspinall undefeated on 44.
