BOLD Venture Park was transformed into a hive of activity and laughter as Darwen Gala boasted its best year ever.

Darwen centre came to a standstill in glorious sunshine as a record 32 colourful floats rolled by, accompanied by collectors in fancy dress, raising money for a variety of charities.

The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Coun Tony Humphrys put other engagements on hold to enjoy the "fabulous atmosphere". He said: "It was absolutely brilliant and you couldn't ask for more. After the terrible disappointment at the Lions Gala because of the weather I think everyone is just thrilled.

"Darweners are always keen to support their local events and the organisers did a tremendous job."

Setting off from Anchor Road, community floats and a Russian missile made up the biggest parade ever. Organisers said he procession took 16 minutes to pass any one point.

Maureen Holdin has helped organise the Lightbown Street float with other residents for nine years. She said: "The procession was great fun and lots of people lined the streets."

The small team of committee volunteers, who organise the extravaganza each year, planned a wide range of entertainment in Borough Road Field including a fun fair, around 50 stalls, live music, dance and performing arts displays, and paintball target practice.

John Sturgess, chairman of the committee, said: "This gala must have broken records for the number of visitors and people taking part.

"We would like to thank everybody who helped make it such a success, including whoever booked the fantastic weather!"

Blackburn with Darwen Council hired a climbing wall for children and Chris Burns was one of the instructors said it was "brilliant to be a part of it all."

Santa made a special summer visit and the Desert Rose belly dancers from Blackburn Dance and Performing Arts, kept pub-goers entertained.
