RESTORED Goodshaw Chapel, in Goodshaw, Rossendale, will open its doors this weekend as part of English Heritage's free days out.

The chapel opened in 1760 when it cost just £191 19s 4d to build. It has now been fully restored, but entry is by prior arrangement with the keyholder.

Goodshaw Chapel is one of 409 historic sites cared for by English Heritage and, of those, 270 can be visited free of charge most of the year.

Dr Simon Thurley, chief executive of English Heritage, said: "For family outings during the school holidays, there is no better way to inspire young imaginations than at the actual site of a battle, among the humble stones which once sheltered ancient man or within the walls of castles where important matters of state were once settled.

"Many sites are the stuff of local legend and lore, plenty are perfect for picnics and play while others graphically show how architecture has evolved.

"All have seen history taking shape through the centuries."

Goodshaw Chapel will be open for viewing throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.
