POLICE discovered a man hiding in bed wearing women's underwear he had just stolen during a burglary in Leigh.
Bolton Crown Court heard that when Thomas McDonald was strip-searched he was found wearing various items of underwear and women's cycling shorts under a pair of long cycling shorts.
When questioned McDonald claimed the leather bra was in fact male underwear and that the ladies knickers were men's swimming trunks. He denied stealing the clothes during the break-in.
McDonald claimed that he had not committed any burglary and said that he had found the clothing in a charity shop bin.
But all the items of underwear and clothing were later positively identified by their owner.
In court McDonald, aged 37, of Avon Road, Norley Hall, Wigan, admitted three counts of burglary in the Leigh area and asked for a fourth similar offence to be taken into consideration.
Judge Philip Raynor said he agreed with the medical reports that McDonald had a treatable psychiatric illness. He sentenced McDonald to a hospital order under the Mental Health Act.
