A TEENAGER from Foulridge died after a crash as his friend gave him a lift home, an inquest heard.

Shane Michael Norman McIntyre, 18, of Burwains Avenue, received multiple injuries in the smash on Skipton Old Road at about 5.30pm on January 13 and the road was closed for six hours.

Mr McIntyre was a front seat passenger in a white Renault 19 travelling towards Kelbrook and driven by Alan Cawdrey, a friend of Shane who was giving him a lift home.

The vehicle, which was carrying three people, left a right hand bend and collided with a black Ford Mondeo carrying four people, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The inquest heard that Mr Cawdrey told police he was driving at about 30mph on the road which had a 30mph limit. However accident investigations showed he could have been travelling at at least 40mph at the time he lost control. Shane was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, the inquest was told.

Three ambulances went to the scene along with police and firefighters and seven people, including Mr McIntyre, were taken to hospital.

Mr McIntyre had been living with his mother, Gillian McIntyre, and her partner in Foulridge for a couple of years after moving from Colne.

Alan Cawdrey, 18, of Carr Road, Colne, was slightly injured and was taken to Burnley General Hospital.

The Mondeo was driven by Gary Proctor, 39, of Ouseburn Road, Blackburn, and he received a slight injury and was taken to Airedale General Hospital, Steeton.

Acting East Lancashire coroner Richard Taylor recorded a verdict of accidental death.

He said: "The stark facts are simple in that what should have been a short journey ended in tragedy because the Renault car went out of control."
