POLICE are appealing for witnesses after thousands of pounds-worth of damage was caused to five vehicles in the centre of Ramsbottom.

PC John Flowers, of Bury police, said: "We had reports that two men were seen at the rear of premises in Ramsbottom town centre attempting to break into vehicles.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the town centre in the early hours of Saturday morning and who saw anyone acting suspiciously to contact the police."

A blue Renault Clio parked on King Street near the Co-op was kicked and jumped on, causing £4,000-worth of damage.

A K-registered Nissan Micra parked on Square Street had a rear window broken and a T-registered Fiat also parked on Square Street had all its windows and lights smashed, causing £500-worth of damage.

Two other vehicles parked on King Street were also damaged.

A Vauxhall Cavalier had its windows, worth £100, smashed and a Fiat Uno was set on fire causing £300-worth of damage.

The Vauxhall Cavalier was then deliberately set on fire and destroyed on Monday night.
