FORMER Rovers and Scotland international striker Kevin Gallacher struck twice as a young and inexperienced Clarets side suffered defeat in their first Avon Insurance Premier Division match of the season.
Gallacher has played 53 times for his country and played well over 400 League games and now he is trying to continue his career at the McAlpine Stadium.
In stark contrast, not one of the 16 players in Ronnie Jepson's squad for last night's match has made one League appearance with a couple of them being first year trainees who came to the club in the summer.
The lack of options for the second string forced skipper Earl Davis, impressive at the back last season, thrust forward into a striking role alongside Matty O'Neill.
As might be expected he won a few headers and worked hard to close down the Town defenders but he is clearly more comfortable at the back.
He did produce one early run and cross from the left but the keeper made a comfortable save.
Gallacher got the opener in the ninth minute with a lovely volley on the run that flew high into the net beyond the dive of keeper James Salisbury, the sort of strike that has seen him enjoy a successful career north and south of the border.
The 35-year-old headed his second home from a corner in the second half but was with drawn before he had a chance to claim his hat-trick.
In between times the visitors had enjoyed the better of the game, creating most of the chances as they kept the ball better than the Clarets.
O'Neill's long thrown was a useful weapon but it was hard work for the youngsters who failed to force a serious save from Phil Senior in the Town goal.
Andrew Waine and Joel Pilkington struggled to control the midfield and too often possession was cheaply surrendered.
In contrast Salisbury had to make a number of saves, the pick of them being when he held a fierce drive from the lively Chris Senior.
The Clarets played the second half with first years Danny Pitham and Gary Carter in central defence after Argentine trialist Elias Bazzi had made way at the interval.
The left back was replaced by Liam Eves, who switched from the middle, having made too many mistakes to impress the watching Stan Ternent.
Sub Paul Macari netted the third goal near the end and the first lesson on the young Clarets steep learning curve was complete.
