A LOCAL hero from Lancaster has reached the national final of this year's Nationwide Awards for Voluntary Endeavour.
Kenneth Bateson has been chosen because of the outstanding voluntary work he has done in the local community.
As well as having a part time job Kenneth spends on average 117 hours per month supporting the local police officers showing bravery and a willingness to make personal sacrifices for the sake of others.
Kenneth has received many commendations for his acts including one for bravery when he saved the life of a man during a fire in a cell at Lancaster police station, showing complete disregard for his own safety.
The awards ceremony, taking place on the October 9 is in the setting of HMS Belfast on the River Thames London.
The awards now in their fifth year, will be presented by Nationwide, in association with the National Council for Voluntary Organisations and the Newspaper Society.
Stuart Bernau, Nationwide's commercial director said: "We are delighted to recognise and reward people who voluntarily give up their time and energy to support others and who are true local heroes.
I hope these awards not only act as encouragement for people who are already active volunteers but also inspires others to make a difference."
