A TEENAGER who drove at speeds of 80mph in residential areas while police followed has been banned from driving.

Bury Magistrates heard how Richard Glover, 19, from Stubbins Street, Stubbins, was first spotted in Walmersley Road, Bury.

Miss Claire Stevens, prosecuting, told how police tried to pull over the N-registered Nissan Almera, but Glover accelerated away from them.

He hit the kerb, puncturing a tyre, but continued at speed into Ramsbottom centre where he tried to lose police by driving on side streets.

He collided with a chasing police car and drove on to Peel Brow estate, colliding with a parked car which shunted into another.

He eventually stopped and fled, abandoning the car.

Miss Stevens said the following day Glover surrendered to police.

Joseph Foxler, defending, said the incident would not have happened if Glover's girlfriend had not handed him the keys.

Mr Foxler said: "He just panicked. He had a rush of adrenaline and drove in the manner described.

"When he got home though he discussed what had happened with his parents and then surrendered himself to the police the following day."

Glover, warned that he had only just escaped a prison sentence, was ordered to serve 200 hours community service, banned for 18 months, ordered to pay £154 compensation to the police and £60 costs.
