SUPER NURSE: Bury Rotary Club named Sister Judith Fletcher of Bury General Hospital's Norris Ward as their 1977 Supernurse. Chosen from applicants within the Bury Area Health Authority, Sister Fletcher of Bolton Road, Bury, won a fortnight's trip to Germany.
BUTTER FINGERS: A police ambush set to catch thieves who had stolen a £400 horsebox misfired when the thieves evaded a police mini-van with an old Hillman.
The box had been stolen from a field near Walmersley Old Road but was spotted hidden by the thieves. The police waited for them to return in the dark and the thieves arrived and hitched the horse box to the Hillman car. Unfortunately, the police were parked some way off and the raiders turned into a side lane and disappeared!
LIFE'S A DRAG: A Surrey company was fined £25 by Bury Magistrates Court after a student working for Bury's Environmental Health Department found a cigarette end in a packet of crisps.
