PRESTWICH HEYS...3 NEW MILLS...2

AFTER a disappointing opening day defeat at Elton Vale, Heys got off the mark on Tuesday when New Mills visited Sandgate in the Manchester League.

Although the win was welcomed, few who were present could have envisaged the outcome, as Heys were one goal down after three minutes and two behind after 20.

The defence was shambolic and New Mills, not a side renowned for their attacking instincts, could hardly believe what was happening.

To Heys' credit, they pulled themselves back into the game. Ricardo Reeves pulled a goal back and David Carrington equalised before the break.

Back on level terms, Heys felt that, with their dominance at the end of the first period, they could go on and achieve their first win of the season. Expectancy is one thing, getting there is another!

The second half was enjoyable as both teams had numerous chances, but it was a piece of individual brilliance from Martin Love which, five minutes from the final whistle, gave Heys the win their comeback deserved.

Tomorrow, Springhead are the visitors to Sandgate, kick-off 2.30pm. Having won their first two games in a convincing manner, they are a force to be reckoned with.

Heys' Reserves travel to Springhead for the reverse fixture having opened the season with a 3-0 win against Elton Vale. Alex Ritchie carried on doing what he does best by scoring twice. Abid Uddin, showing immediate first team potential, scored the third.

Thursday is the midweek night for the reserves, and next week they are at home to Leigh Athletic, kick-off 6.30pm.

On Sunday, Heys' B team open their season in the North West Youth Alliance with a home game against Morecambe, kick-off 2pm.
