A NEW home is being sought for a dog who cheated death once but is now on his final reprieve.

The long-haired Alsatian cross, believed to be around six years old, was rescued from water at the bottom of the quarry at Green Haworth Golf Club, off Willows Lane, Accrington.

Hyndburn dog warden Stephen Wood believes the animal was thrown in deliberately and is desperate to rehouse the pooch.

He said: "A number of people telephoned to say they had heard a dog howling for several hours and when we got up there you could just see the top of his head above the water.

"The sides are so steep he just couldn't get out but we got to him in time and pulled him free.

"I thought his owner would come forward to collect him as he is a cracking dog but when no one came I realised what must have happened and the more I think about it the more convinced I am that someone put him in there, which is really sad."

The dog, which was suffering hypothermia, is now back to good health and has been given the recommended injections and a new name, Arnold.

But dogs taken into the kennels by the council dog warden can be housed for only one week before they have to be rehomed or destroyed and yesterday was Arnold's eighth day.

Mr Wood said: "He was about 10 minutes from death and it seems a shame to save his life one week and then put him to sleep the next."

Arnold will need plenty of room because of his size. Anyone who can give him a home can call 07970 681225.
