AINSWORTH enjoyed its best village day in living memory on Saturday (Aug 17).
The event, organised by Ainsworth Village Task Force, made in excess of £2,000 which will be ploughed back into the community. Task Force secretary Maxine Tierney said: "It was fantastic. More than 1,000 people must have visited during the course of the day."
Village Days had been a traditional feature of Ainsworth life for decades until a couple of years ago. That was why the Task Force, which is made up of community volunteers, decided to revive them. A coconut shy, tug-o-war, cherry pie-eating competition and bran tub were just some of the attractions on the village green.
And proving he wasn't shy when it came to knocking down some coconuts is Joshua Bowman (8), pictured having some throwing fun.
"A lot of the old people in the village said they couldn't remember a better day," said Mrs Tierney.
Musical entertainment was provided by local band, Marmalade Suitcase, and the day was rounded off with a spectacular 20-minute firework display.
Mrs Tierney said: "We'll have our work cut out trying to top it next year."
