POLICE enquiries are ongoing despite the arrest of one man charged with the murder of 42-year-old Stennett Roy "Rupert" Satchell at Bury in May, an inquest has been told.
Coroner Mr Barrie Williams opened the hearing into the death of Mr Satchell at a house in Goldfinch Drive,Bury, on May 23. Mr Satchell died from a shotgun wound to the chest.
Twenty five-year-old Gary James Kelly, from Rochdale, has been charged with Mr Satchell's murder and has been remanded to the Crown Court, Manchester, where he will make a first appearance on September 19.
Detective Inspector Jane Antrobus, heading the investigating police team, told the coroner that police enquiries were continuing in respect of the incident.
Mr Satchell, who was married at Bury Register Office last Easter, lived with his wife Lisa in Topping Fold Road.
Det Insp. Antrobus said the emergency services were called to an address in Goldfinch Drive in the early hours of May 23 following reports that a man had been shot. They found Mr Satchell lying on the lounge floor with a gunshot wound to the chest. There were no vital signs and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
There was a Nigerian man and a Jamaican woman at the scene. The Nigerian said he had arrived that evening and been asleep in the lounge area. Mr Satchell was also sleeping in the room because the occupant had been frightened earlier by a man threatening with a shotgun.
The Nigerian visitor reported that they were awoken around 1.30 am by the door being banged open and two males entering. They were shouting and asking for money. They then searched the room, one of the males picked up a bag and the other shot Mr Satchell. They both ran off towards Chaffinch Drive.
The body of Mr Satchell was identified by his sister Beverley Westwell, of Grants Lane, Ramsbottom.
Mrs Satchell said her husband, who was the father of three children in Jamaica, had lived in the West Indies and London. She said they met in 2000 and after the relationship progressed they moved in together.
They decided to marry and friends and family from Jamaica came over for the ceremony. A couple of friends subsequently moved into a house in Goldfinch Drive and Mr Satchell often visited them, sometimes stopping overnight.
On May 22, although anxious when her husband did not come home, she was aware that he had stayed out before.
The coroner heard that a second post mortem, by a Home Office pathologist on behalf of the man charged with murder, confirmed death due to a shotgun wound to the chest.
The coroner adjourned the hearing which will now be superseded by the criminal proceedings.
