A CENTRE aimed at providing access to computers, helping with learning new skills and job hunting opened in Nelson yesterday.

The Lomeshaye Skills for Life Centre has been created in the former Lomeshaye School building which has stood empty for around five years.

It is a joint venture between Pendle Training and the Pendle Pakistani Welfare Association.

The centre in Lomeshaye Road will provide support and advice to the whole community, offering access to computers, e-mail and the internet.

The site has been operating for a number of weeks but was officially opened yesterday. One of those using the centre, Derek Kerr said: "Having been retired for a number of years I was feeling left behind. When anyone was discussing thing like IT I hadn't got a clue what they were talking about.

"I decided that it was time I did something about it and contacted Pendle Training. Since then I have found a completely new interest and thanks to the most helpful and courteous staff my leisure time is mostly gainfully employed.

"I will always be grateful for the help I received at the centre."

A range of courses, including computers and personal skills such as motivation and communication, are available as well as a job search facility.

A number of special guests attended the opening including Andrew Heyderman, the workforce development manager for the North West Development Agency.

Project manager, Sandra Bignell, said: "Its location is ideal. We've created an informal atmosphere so it's a really welcoming place to visit and the opening hours are flexible too.

"Being able to get access to new skills is really important. The centre is open to everyone regardless of colour, sex or age."

Another Pendle resident taking advantage of the new facilities, Marilyn Gibbons said: "I have enrolled on an internet course.

"When I started here I knew nothing about e-mail or the web, but the staff have been very helpful and wonderful."
