A LONG-standing member of the Anti-Nazi League in Burnley has been cautioned after an incident involving the leader of the British National Party.
Margaret Smith, 49, was so enraged by the BNP's presence at Turf Moor for the Gannow ward election recount earlier this year that she threw a glass of water over the party leader, Nick Griffin.
Mrs Smith has been a member of Burnley's Anti-Nazi League for 10 years and is a member of the co-operative running the Red Triangle vegetarian cafe on St James Street, Burnley.
After the event she said she had been unable to control herself and her anger took over.
At the time she insisted: "It was not premeditated. I became increasingly sickened that Nick Griffin was already at the count with a large entourage when I arrived."
Margaret, who lives in Nelson, was escorted out of the building by the police after throwing the glass of water at Mr Griffin.
Police gave Mrs Smith a formal caution last week following an investigation into the incident by police and the electoral returning officer.
A police spokesman said: "We can confirm a woman has been cautioned over this incident."
