A DARWEN nurse who developed an innovative approach for the treatment of diabetic patients has won a national award.
Kathleen Eccles was highly commended in the wound care category of the Nursing Standard Nurses 2002 Awards for her work at Blackburn Royal Infirmary.
She developed and co-ordinated a series of treatments for patients with foot ulceration, including the use of specially formed casts and chiropody techniques.
Patients now enjoy improved mobility during treatment and shorter -- or in some cases -- no periods at all in hospital.
Kathleen said: "I am delighted that my work has been recognised in this way. I believe the results are excellent because the treatments is adapted to each patient's needs."
She beat hundreds of entrants from across the country to win. A certificate and £500 will be presented to her at a special gala dinner at the Royal Lancaster House, London, on October 30.
The Nursing Standard's annual awards are in their 15th year and aim to recognise the efforts of ordinary nurses who improve the standards of care to patients.
