IT HAS been announced that something in the region of £340,000 of lottery revenue is being given to some members of the legal profession to enable them to fight cases of rejected asylum seekers.
Yet, here in Lancashire, Burnley Health Care Trust is having to go cap-in-hand to the public to enable them to purchase a scanner for detecting prostate and testicular cancer.
Most people would, I feel sure, prefer to have their money used for the causes for which the National Lottery was originally set up.
Of late, Camelot have been bemoaning the fall in the amount of money put into their coffers since they were awarded their second contract. Giving large slices of "good cause" cash to the legal professional will lower even further the money being placed into the lottery. Why can't these legal eagles give up some of their spare time, as thousands of voluntary workers do, and give their services free in these cases?
