MOTORISTS who refuse to put the brakes on their speed were today told where 100 new speed cameras across Lancashire were to be installed.
Work will begin on installing the equipment over the next month and will result in 230 cameras being in operation by the end of September.
That total will rise to about 500 by the end of 2004, when the three year road safety project, which involves all fines money being pumped back into more cameras, comes to an end.
The Lancashire Road Safety Partnership expects £20million will have been raised through £60 fines by then, which will mainly be spent on more cameras and publicity blitzes.
The extra camera sites will be a mixture of fixed cameras and mobile cameras, where the police park up for a set period of time. Blackburn with Darwen will receive the bulk of the new cameras. It gets 22 new locations, of which six will be serviced by Eastern Division police's mobile camera.
The borough currently has 16 sites, seven of which are mobile.
In Hyndburn, four new fixed sites have been unveiled to complement its existing eight sites, five of which are mobile.
Ribble Valley will gain two new fixed sites on top of the current four, one of which is mobile.
In Burnley, eight new sites have been located -- on top of the existing 17. Five of the 17 sites are mobile.
In Pendle, which has six mobile sites and six static sites, another five fixed cameras are on the way.
And Rossendale gets five new cameras, on top of its existing four sites, of which one is mobile.
Chorley gets six new cameras and South Ribble two.
Former traffic chief inspector Ian Bell, who is leading the multi-agency road safety crackdown as project director, said: "The sites have been chosen because they have histories of accidents often caused by speeding.
"The aim is to further demonstrate that speeding will not be tolerated because it puts lives at risk."
The extra cameras have been criticised by the RAC Foundation, the campaigning arm of the motoring organisation.
A spokesman said: "The fact so much money is being made from the cameras shows that they are not working."
