THE Clarets kick-started their reserve campaign with an impressive 2-0 win at Molineux last night.
After the disappointing defeat by Huddersfield Town a week earlier it was a stronger Clarets side in action as manager Stan Ternent looked to give some of his first team squad some much needed match practice against Wolves.
And it was two of his senior strikers who got the goals to give the Clarets a deserved victory.
In the first half Dimitri Papadopoulos won and then converted a spot kick while Robbie Blake pushed his claims for a first team recall with a lively display and late goal that he manufactured himself.
The Greek striker did well to win a spot kick when he closed down keeper Matt Murray, nicked the ball away from him and was then tripped as he headed away from goal.
He took responsibility from the spot but blasted his first effort over the bar. The referee ordered the kick to be taken again because of encroachment and this time Papadopoulos made no mistake as he tucked the ball into the corner.
There were few chances for either side but Blake was involved in most of Burnley's best efforts and it was no surprise when he doubled the lead two minutes from time.
With typical trickery he jinked his way into the Wolves box before converting with a low left footed drive into the bottom corner of the net. What Ternent now wants to see is that sort of quality reproduced in the first team.
Blake and Graham Branch both played the full 90 minutes while Paul Weller and Papadopoulos came off at the interval and Andy Payton played all but ten minutes.
The young players had a much better night than the previous week against Huddersfield, benefiting from the experienced heads around them, and James Salisbury made a fine save to deny teenage striker Graham Lord.
But the key factor for Ternent will be how his first team players have come on for the outing and what improvement it might have on their first team performances.
