FIREFIGHTERS saved 11 people trapped above a fire in a Morecambe hostel in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday morning.
An investigation is continuing into the blaze, which started at the foot of the stairs in the four-storey block on Euston Road, but police say it may have been started deliberately.
Fire crews rushed to the scene after being called at 1.55am, and discovered the residents at the windows, struggling for air.
However, all were rescued and none required hospital treatment.
The stairwell was destroyed and there was smoke damage to other rooms.
Police say they are continuing to investigate the incident, in conjunction with the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
A spokesman said on Monday: "We cannot confirm that the fire is suspicious at this stage, but the position of the seat of the fire would suggest that it was."
The hostel is run by the Department of Work, Pensions and Social Security, which has moved to re-house eight of the residents in a Lancaster hotel.
