AN opera star will return to his roots to round off the 31st season of concerts presented by Leigh Music Society.

Bass Simon Wilding will be welcomed to end the six Sunday afternoon shows in the Derby Room, Leigh Library.

Simon, who trained at the Royal Northern School of Music and won the Wagner Bursary Award, will be accompanied by prize winning pianist Kevin Thraves.

As well as opera work Simon sings in concert and has recorded the roles of Dick Deadeye in HMS Pinafore with the D'Oyly Carte and Lieut Ratcliffe in Billy Budd with the Halle Orchestra.

The new society season starts on October 6 and the group is looking to boost membership from 60 this year.

The group, proud possessors of a Steinway grand piano, was set up in 1972, administered by a local committee, with the aim of promoting and developing the art of music.

Secretary Freda Collier said: "The early enthusiasm and aims are still as strong today."

Concert secretary Mary Halliwell has found another brilliant selection of artistes for the winter months.

The events, all starting at 2.15pm, begin on October 6 with a performance by soprano Angela Rowley and pianist Anna Le Hair.

This is followed on November 3 by Stewart Death on piano and Catherine Wilmers on cello.

The December 1 concert stars the Junior School of the Royal College of Music followed by pianist Andrew Wilde on January 5.

The Dulcian Wind Quintet play on February 2 followed by Simon Wilding on March 2.

Membership fees for the six concerts are £21 adults, £9 students and children, or they can be attended individually at £4.50 adults £2 children.
