THE John Taylor Foundation for young athletes has been set up in memory of the Bingley Harrier who died earlier this month.
Taylor, aged 33, was an accomplished road and cross country runner, but his name will mostly be associated with the fells where he became an England International.
He competed frequently in East Lancashire winning the Great Hameldon Hill Race in Accrington as recently as May.
It is a sad irony that at the time of his death he had been running as well as ever, as his victories over John Wieczorek in the Blackstone Edge Fell Race at Littleborough and George Ehrhardt at Stoodley Pike, Todmorden, will confirm.
In his final race he was sixth in the British Championship race at Y Garn, but two days later he developed breathing difficulties and died with an enlarged heart. The foundation which will bear his name has been set up to create awareness in young athletes so that they can make sure they get regular health checks.
Clayton Harriers Ian Greenwood and Garry Wilkinson who were present at Y Garn represented the club at John's funeral.
