DOCK AND ROLLS: The mayoral Rolls Royce was lying in dock for repairs which would cost £4,000. The black Phantom Five Limousine was being fitted with a £2,000 engine after clocking up 118,000 miles in 12 years. Repairs to the sub-frame and additional body were to cost an extra £2,000.
ROCK SOLID: An "imaginative" plan to revitalise The Rock as a pedestrian shopping area, with new stores, shopping blocks and a multi-storey car park, was approved by Bury Council.
DOWN TO EARTH: After seeing a film about mountain rescue, nine-year-old Peter Wilding of Walmersley Road, Bury, and three of his pals decided to try and emulate their heroes. However, things didn't work out quite as planned for Peter fell ten feet from a bridge in Castlecroft Road and had to be taken to Bury General Hospital for treatment to bruising and a cut tongue.
DOWN IN THE DUMPS: Proposals to dump 200 tons of rubbish a day for the next ten years in a quarry near their homes was causing anger and anxiety to residents in the Lowes Road area of Bury. Homeowners feared that if the proposed licence for tipping in Gorses Quarry and Halsall's Brickworks, off Lowes Road, was granted, it could lead to a major health hazard.
