IF GRITTY social satire doesn't sound like the stuff of musicals -- think again.
International hit musical Blood Brothers will soon arrive at Blackpool's Opera House, and producers promise a "captivating story" coupled with memorable music and heart-felt emotion.
Set in Liverpool, the production stars Denise Nolan (of the famous Nolan sisters) and Adam Watkiss, winner of ITV talent show This Is My Moment.
Denise plays young mother-of-seven Mrs Johnstone, who is deserted by her husband and takes a job as a housekeeper to make ends meet. Before long, she discovers she is pregnant again -- this time with twins -- and in a moment of desperation she enters into a secret pact with her employer, leading to the show's shattering climax.
Much of the show's success has been attributed to its writer Willy Russell, whose credits include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine, both huge stage and screen hits.
A spokesman for the show commented: "Willy Russell has shown that despite the demands of the marketplace it is still possible to marry together social commentary and subtle characterisation with a story of immense broad appeal."
Blood Brothers plays Blackpool's Opera House from Monday, September 2 to Saturday, September 21, (except Sundays) with matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays. For more details or to book phone the box office on 292029.
