POLICE are already heralding success in a clampdown on trouble.

Their Operation Arrival managed to reduce crime by 30 per cent over a six-day period and they made 220 arrests, a 14 per cent increase on last year.

"The clear message is that troublemakers will not be talerated in the town centre and offenders will be dealt with appropriately," said Chief Inspector Richard Bayly who led the operation.

"We are delighted that the operation has been such a success and officers throughout the weekend have received positive feedback from visitors to the town regarding the high visibility policing tactics."

He added: "The commitment of everyone involved in the operation including police officers, members of the Special Constabulary, our partner agencies and volunteers is greatly appreciated by the law-abiding holiday makers who come to the town to enjoy themselves."
