PUB bosses have called an urgent security review after a landlord fought off a robber with a 16-inch carving knife.

Inn Venturers, owners of the tenancy division of Jennings Brewery, have already fitted an alarm at the Gordon Lennox Arms, Burnley Road, Cliviger, after Ian Jagger was terrified by an intruder.

Mr Jagger was held at knifepoint when the robber crept into the pub and demanded money early on Tuesday morning. He said he had been at the pub for only three weeks and was just settling in and getting to know locals when the incident occurred.

Inn Venturers director Ken Lupton said the company was quickly taking steps to beef up security.

He said: "What happened was awful. We have sent people to the pub to put in added security devices.

"We do not want to go into the ins and outs as to what exactly we are doing but we hope that it will help the landlord feel a little bit safer.

"The locks were changed immediately when we found out what had happened and an urgent security review was called for."

Ian, who is well known locally in the pub circle for his time at the Brunshaw, Brunshaw Road, for two and a half years and his time in Colne at the Derby Arms, said: "I am awaiting the outcome of a meeting I am having with representatives from Jennings on Thursday.

"They have put temporary precautionary security measures in the pub but I am waiting to see exactly what new security measures are being proposed.

"It is good to know that Jennings are committed to providing the pub with extra security and that they are doing something about it."

Police are investigating and urging witnesses to come forward. Anybody who may have seen anything suspicious at 5.55am on Tuesday morning in the Cliviger or Todmorden area should contact Burnley CID on 01282 472144.
