TRAINS could be arriving at all stations on the East Lancashire Railway earlier than expected.
Since flooding earlier this summer, the Rawtenstall section of the route between Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall has been closed.
A solution to the problem involved repairing damage to the Lower Ashenbottom Bridge, which was left partially collapsed by tree debris during the deluge.
Fears were raised that repair work could be delayed by six months, with an embargo on heavy machinery imposed by the Environment Agency until next spring to protect spawning fish.
To get around the problem, engineers from Bury Council will work with contractors to construct a dam around the pier. This will allow bridge foundations to be rebuilt with reinforced concrete and clad with original stone, without affecting the rest of the river.
Train services could recommence as early as November.
Mr Peter Duncan, railway company chairman, said: "This is great news for the ELR and the thousands of visitors that come to see us every year.
"It should mean that, as usual, we will be able to run a full seasonal service in the run up to Christmas, especially our ever popular Santa specials."
