BURNLEY bowler James Anderson has been named this morning in the England Academy squad that will spend this winter in Australia to cap a wonderful summer.

The young paceman has burst to the fore this season with some stunning displays for Lancashire at county level and he will be joined by fellow Lancashire youngster Kyle Hogg.

Alex Tudor was the most senior player named in England's winter academy squad.

The 15-strong group will be under the supervision of Australian Rodney Marsh again and 20-year-old Anderson, who has taken 44 first-class wickets in 10 matches this season, is the latest emerging bowler to impress with his raw speed as England seek for back-up to the ageing Darren Gough and Andrew Caddick.

In the case of Gough aggravating his knee injury further, or one of the other bowlers being crocked, either Tudor or perhaps even Anderson, would step into the senior fold.

"Alex Tudor has been included in the academy squad rather than the Test squad because we have concerns about his strength and stamina and want him to concentrate on these areas this winter," said chairman of selectors David Graveney.

Meanwhile, as expected Lancashire all-rounder is in the main Ashes party that will tour Down Under over the winter.

The selectors have turned to Graham Thorpe and Darren Gough despite concerns about the former's off the field problems and the latter's injuries.

Richard Dawson has been given the job of second spinner to Ashley Giles and the raw talent of fast bowlers Steve Harmison and Simon Jones has got them on to the trip.

James Foster is the back-up wicket-keeper to 39-year-old Alec Stewart and former Lancashire batasman John Crawley has been deemed to have done enough this summer to earn another chance.

England's 16-man squad for this winter's Ashes tour, is: N Hussain (Essex, capt) Age 34 Tests 75, ME Trescothick (Somerset) 26 26, MP Vaughan (Yorkshire) 27 23, MA Butcher (Surrey) 30 45, GP Thorpe (Surrey) 33 77, JP Crawley (Hampshire) 30 34, A Flintoff (Lancashire) 24 21, AJ Stewart (Surrey, wkt) 39 122, JS Foster (Essex, wkt) 22 6, AF Giles (Warwickshire) 29 18, RKJ Dawson (Yorkshire) 22 3, D Gough (Yorkshire) 31 56, AR Caddick (Somerset) 33 57, MJ Hoggard (Yorkshire) 25 15, SJ Harmison (Durham) 23 1, SP Jones (Glamorgan) 23 1.
