NEW boy Liam Denning was the star of the show as Harwood maintained their NWCL Division Two run which has seen them lose just one league encounter this season.

The 23-year-old, a former Morecambe player, was superb for Harwood even getting on scoresheet to cap a good debut.

"He was outstanding, I was very impressed with him," said the Showground boss John Hughes.

"He played a lot of quality balls and if he can do that week in week out he will be great for us."

Harwood started with three debutants, the others being Richard Fogarty and Andy Taylor, both former Clitheroe players.

And Fogarty made sure he made a good impression scoring twice with his head. Denning provided one of the crosses while Chris Heslop did well to set Fogarty up for the second.

"I have seen Foggy play, I know what he is capable of doing and he did well last night, as did Andy," continued the boss.

"We have a young side here with a few older players like Andy and Dave Sharples thrown in and it seems to be working out okay so far.

"The new lads all impressed and now we have competition for places."

The scorer of the other goals were Rizz Khan while Helsop got the final goal.

"We scored first through Liam, they equalised from a free kick and it was 1-1 at half time. After the break though it was just one way traffic.

"I was well chuffed. We are also not conceding a lot of goals which is a boost for us.

"If we are not doing that, we always have a chance.

"I have two quality keepers here in Daryl Sloane and Bobby Harris and we will need both of them throughout the season."

Hughes has also added a third, signing shot-stopper Graham Kershaw, another former Morecambe trainee who was at Clitheroe.

The only problem Hughes has now is that the new trio cannot play on Saturday when Harwood welcome Crook Town to the Showground in the FA Cup first qualifying round - where £7,500 is up for grabs with a win.

"They weren't signed in time but it gives others a chance.

"The money would be nice but I am more bothered about how we play and what we do."
