DURING September and October you could do worse than head for the hills around Uppermill.

From the M65 follow the M66 and M62. Turn off at Saddleworth and follow the signs for Uppermill.

Here there is a splendid little museum with a wildlife exhibition and nearby is the source of the River Tame. This flows down to Stockport where it joins with the Goyt and the Etheron. The three streams then become the Mersey. But back to Uppermill. Whatever the season the Tame is a naturalists' delight and on my stroll there seemed to be butterflies everywhere.

In the warm sunshine I watched red admirals, peacocks commas and a painted lady sucking up the nectar from thistles and knapweed.

Adult butterflies do not grow but they use nectar like a car needs petrol.

Nectar is in fact nature's fuel.
