DEEP in thought, firefighters at Burnley Fire Station pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the September 11 tragedy.

In common with their colleagues across East Lancashire and the rest of the country, they held a minute's silence for the victims of the World Trade Centre and Pentagon attacks - including 343 firefighters.

The Bishop of Burnley, the Rt Rev John Goddard, was holding a service for peace at the town's Peace Garden, and at Blackburn Cathedral a recital will be followed by a multi-faith service tonight. Among those attending will be representatives from emergency services who will scatter rose petals as a tribute to the dead. Town Halls are flying their flags at half-mast.
