MOTORISTS could face lengthy diversions for the next 12 weekends as work takes place on slip roads at Junction 33, near Galgate.

The work starts this weekend, with drivers having to come off at junction 34 and drive through the city centre from 8pm on Saturday to 12 noon on Sunday.

The work clashes with one of the busiest weekends of the year, when Lancaster University's students return in the last weekend in September, but the Highways Agency says it may not be necessary to close the roads every weekend.

Project manager, Paul Turner, said: "We have tried to ensure that motorists will face as little disruption as possible, in part by scheduling the closures at weekend when there is less traffic."
