DANCE students from the Leigh-based Kathleen Atherton Academy of Dancing received a standing ovation for top performances at the Liverpool Empire Theatre.

The Academy entered junior and senior teams in the "Dance 2002" competition organised by Harlequin Enterprises which attracted entries from 20 of the region's dance schools.

The 20 strong junior group of seven to 11 year olds performed a very slick tap routine to a medley from the musical Me and My Girl which brought a standing applause from the judges who awarded them second place.

The seniors (12-17 year olds) produced a most technical and artistic oriental dance to the music One Night in Bangkok from the musical Chess which also earned a standing ovation and number one position.

A happy contingent returned to Leigh with a glittering haul of two cups and a shield from judges Bonnie Langford, Craig James (choreographer for Boyzone) and professional dancer Jennifer Lee.

Delighted Academy principal Kathleen Atherton was pleased with the performances of her pupils and delighted with their appearance.

She said: "The costumes were designed and made by parents Olive, Denise, Debbie and Liz -- thank you, they were fabulous."
