A SOCCER tournament which will help unite the communities, cultures and races of Bury and Oldham will be staged later this month.
The second Bury Building Bridges seven-a-side football event will be held at the Goshen Sports Centre in Bury on Sunday, September 29 between 10 and 4pm.
Teams from Radcliffe, Bury, Ramsbottom and Tottington will play youth teams from Oldham. Also taking part will be teams from Oldham and Bury police and the Army.
One of the men behind the event is Dr Mohammed Salim, former chairman of Bury Racial Equality Council and co-ordinator of Oldham's Coppice Community Centre.
Dr Salim, who is also chairman of Bury's Jinnah Day Care Centre, said: "After the recent riots in northern towns, we felt that it was important to bring together young people from different cultures and races residing in Bury and Oldham."
He paid tribute to the Army, police, Greater Manchester Police Authority, who are sponsoring the tournament, and to Bury FC who are assisting in the organisation of the event.
"We hope that spectators from all races residing in Bury and Oldham will be watching.
