TRADING standards bosses are urging people to ensure that they can sleep safely this winter.
Officers are holding free electric blanket safety tests, pointing out that residents die every year because of faulty blankets.
The first tests are held on Thursday September 26 at St John's Social Centre in Parkinson Street, Bury.
The second session is on Friday September 27 at Radcliffe Civic Suite. This will form part of a special event, "Promoting Health in Later Life". It will run from 10.30am-3.30pm and will include cookery and fitness demonstrations, health and beauty advice, safety, competitions and quizzes.
While the tests are free, they must be booked in advance by calling 253 5566.
Councillor Pam Walker, public protection spokesman, said: "As the nights get colder, people will be digging out their electric blankets and getting ready to use them. How many, though, think to have the blankets checked before switching them on?
"Electric blankets, like any electrical item, need to be treated with care. In previous safety checks we have come across blankets that have never had a routine check in more than 15 years.
"Your life could be at risk. Surely it is worth taking a little time to ensure you can sleep safely in your own bed?"
