KEEN gardeners across East Lancashire were today waiting to hear the winners of Lancashire's Best Kept Village Competition 2002.
Final judging for the event, which is sponsored by the Lancashire Tourism Partnership and Lancashire County Council, took place over the last two weeks in August as competition judge and Lancashire Evening Telegraph nature journalist Ron Freethy visited the two final villages in each category, before choosing the overall winner.
Blacko in Pendle and Welch Whittle, Chorley, will battle it out in the small village class while Harrop Fold, Ribble Valley, faces Hill Chapel, Preston in the hamlet class.
Other finalists Clifton on the Fylde, and Over Kellett near Lancaster, in the champion class, and Pilling and Stalmine, both Wyre, in the large village class.
An awards ceremony for the winners will take place on Saturday, October 26, at West Bradford Village Hall. The winners will receive a framed watercolour of their village by artist Gordon Wilkinson.
Trophies, commemorative plaques and certificates will be presented to the winners by Anthony Goldstone, Chairman of the Lancashire Tourism Partnership, leader of the County Council Hazel Harding and Ron Freethy.
